SEEDING DIRECTLY THROUGH PLASTIC MULCH

Authors:   A. Hezroni, Y. Alper, A. Antler, I. Wolf
Abstract:
Mulching seed beds with plastic sheets is practiced for a variety of purposes. In some cases, e.g. for soil sterilization, mulching is applied to the beds prior to seeding. The mulch could be left in place during the growing season to serve for weed control, for raising soil temperature, etc. and save the cost of extra mulching. However, seeding has to be carried out through the plastic sheets.

A technique was developed to cut small openings into the plastic mulch and insert a predetermined number of seeds at preset intervals and depths, into the soil, and then compact the soil over them. The technique operates in conjunction with metering devices of common seeders, either mechanical or pneumatic.
