ISHS Acta Horticulturae 185: I International Protea Research Symposium

PROTEA PRODUCTION IN ISRAEL

Author:   J. Ben-Jaacov
Abstract:
Growth conditions in Israel are compared with those in the Proteas' natural habitat and in places where Proteas are grown commercially. The climate in Israel is drier and hotter during summer than in other Protea areas. The soil and the irrigation water in Israel have a high pH, a relatively high mineral content and contain free lime and it is difficult to grow most species which, elsewhere, are grown commercially. A few species were selected, however, and have successfully been grown commercially.

Active research is carried out and is supported by field trials. Main research projects are involved with soil, water and the nutrition of Proteas under our conditions. Proteas are grown under intensive conditions of fertilization, irrigation and even artificial growth substrates. Other research activities involve control of flowering and pot plant production. Research is needed to widen the assortment of varieties which can be grown successfully.
