| Abstract:
The past five years have been a time of expansion and innovation in the British Columbia raspberry industry. Expansion has involved both the processing and fresh market sections of the industry. The former has been stimulated by increased demands of berries for juice, yogurt and individual quick freeze while the latter has been stimulated by the increased demand of berries for pick-your-own, local sales and long distance shipping. Innovations include: wide scale acceptance of machine harvesting, cane burning, several new cultivars and improved procedures for fresh marketing. At the same time, there have been developments in the British Columbia breeding program that have influenced and reflected the industry situation. Among developments to be discussed are those involving new cultivars and advanced selections, breeding for virus control and for resistance to cane diseases, identification of both pre- and post-harvest fruit rot resistance, germplasm expansion and techniques to aid selection procedures. | |
