ISHS Acta Horticulturae 183: IV International Rubus and Ribes Symposium

MECHANICAL HARVESTING OF RUBUS AND RIBES IN SWEDEN

Author:   S. Olander
Abstract:
The Swedish juice and jam industry imports the major part of the fruit and berries they use. Exceptions are blackcurrants and wild berries such as blueberries and lingonberries.

Blackcurrants are grown on approximately 1200 ha in Sweden. We have around 35 to 40 mechanical harvesters of 5 different brands and seven models plus some machines built by the growers themselves.

Red raspberries are grown on only some 70 ha in Sweden. They are all harvested by hand for the fresh market or by pick-your-own operations. A couple of test plots have been planted, where some 20 different varieties will be tested for mechanical harvesting. The first test harvest will hopefully be in 1985 with a harvester from Denmark.
