GROWING RASPBERRIES UNDER SUBTROPICAL CONDITIONS* |

| Abstract:
Winter chilling in subtropical regions is supposed to be insufficient to fulfill the chilling requirement of red raspberry (Rubus idaeus). In an attempt to adapt this fruit to the subtropical conditions of Israel, a few selected cultivars were tested in several growing areas. Their growth characteristics and yield were recorded over a period of several years, in two regions: the coastal plain and the mountain area. It was found that some cultivars can be successfully adapted in the mountain region, even to a mild winter. In the coastal region bud break was improved by treatment with cyanamide, which increased yield significantly and advanced the harvest period. | |
