OBSERVATIONS ON PACIFIC COASTAL RUBUS AND RIBES GERMPLASM |

| Abstract:
Blackberries and raspberries (Rubus) are relatively minor commercial crops in California: 'Boysen' (San Joaquin Valley) is the most important, 'Olallie' (central coast) next, both grown primarily for processing; and various raspberries are grown in the central coast, primarily for late-summer and fall fresh-market fruit. Essentially no commercial currant or gooseberries (Ribes) are grown. Changes in all cases are possible, brought about mostly by economic fluctuations. In travelling about the Pacific Coast area from the south of Chile (Pta. Arenas) to British Columbia, from sea level to very high elevation (including the mountains of Hawaii), a number of interesting Rubus and Ribes plants have been observed. Many display obvious genetic variation worthy of note, further study and possible conservation. | |
