ISHS Acta Horticulturae 183: IV International Rubus and Ribes Symposium

FOREWORD

Author:   G. Redalen
Abstract:
The papers in the present proceedings were given at the Fourth International Rubus and Ribes Symposium held in Norway, Sweden and Denmark from July 28 to August 3, 1985. The Symposium was organized by the Rubus-Ribes Working Group of the Fruit Section of the International Society for Horticultural Science. All aspects of research and production of Rubus and Ribes crops were emphasized.

About 80 delegates and accompanying persons from 18 countries attended the Symposium. Of the 47 papers and posters presented, about 2/3 dealt with Rubus and 1/3 with Ribes crops.

The Symposium was held at several locations in Scandinavia, starting in western Norway visiting the State Research Station Njøs and red raspberry growers in that area. Most of the papers and posters were presented during a two day session at the Agricultural University of Norway in Aas, eastern Norway. The Symposium continued as an extensive trip, including visits at a black currant grower and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Division of Fruit Breeding - Balsgåard in southern Sweden, and Edelgave plantation and K.V. Saft Vallø processing plant near Copenhagen, Denmark. The Symposium ended at the Research Centre for Horticulture, Aarslev, Denmark, where machine harvesting was given special attention.

The following locations were proposed for the next Symposium: New Zealand, Oregon and New York/Maryland. It was finally decided to hold the next meeting in Corvallis, Oregon in 1989, preferably in the third week of August. The chairmanship will be decided later.

Considerable support given from several organizations and companies are greatly appreciated. The substantial financial contribution from the Norwegian Ministry of Agriculture was particularly helpful.

A lot of people contributed to the organization of the Symposium, and it is not possible to mention everyone. In particular I would like to acknowledge Mrs. Nina Heiberg and the others from the staff at the Department of Pomology, Agricultural University of Norway, and Dr. Viktor Trajkovski and Mr. Ole Callesen, who where the contact persons in Sweden and Denmark, respectively.
