ISHS Acta Horticulturae 182: I International Symposium on Taxonomy of Cultivated Plants

THE FOLLOW-UP OF REGISTRATION.

Authors:   C. van Ettekoven, G.J. Steinbuch
Abstract:
In order to monitor the maintenance and trade of approximately 2400 vegetable varieties in the Netherlands, N.A.K.G. uses a routine (post)-control system. Efficiency is a prerequisite of this system.

Every year a large number of basic seed samples as well as postcontrol samples of seed lots taken from the trade are checked for their varietal identity and varietal uniformity. The samples are sown in the trial field at the N.A.K.G., grouped if possible according to discontinuous characters. Within the groups the samples are ordered in gradation of continuous characters. N.A.K.G. uses its knowledge of the varieties and, if necessary, the description of the varieties to assess varietal identity and varietal uniformity. In a limited number of cases a reference sample is used in the trials. Besides the tests in the N.A.K.G. trial fields, N.A.K.G. inspectors visit the seed firms regularly to monitor the maintenance of vegetable varieties by these firms.
