ISHS Acta Horticulturae 182: I International Symposium on Taxonomy of Cultivated Plants

ORIENTAL NOMENCLATURE AND THE CODE

Author:   T.J. Savige
Abstract:
The International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants is a document largely framed by Westerners due to the fact that there was little input from Oriental botanists and horticulturalists at its conception. For this reason little attention has been paid to establishing a suitable uniform basis for dealing with plant names originally published in oriental characters.

There are two areas which cause some difficulty for the Registrars of Genera which include substantial numbers of cultivars of oriental origin, such as Magnolias, Peonies, Maples, Azaleas and Camellias. These are priority and name formation.
