Abstract:
The registration of cultivar (variety) names preceded the introduction of the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants by about fifty years.
Working groups and committees were formed; their efforts led to the compilation of check lists; these early check lists became the bases for cultivar name registration.
Plant societies with an established cultivar name registration program were welcome candidates to become the first International Registration Authorities to be appointed under the rules of the new International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants - 1953.
