Abstract:
As a prerequisite to registration of new cultivars of onions Allium cepa L. it is important that established cultivars are classified.
The best characters for this purpose are easily assessed qualitative characters which allow subdivision into clearly defined groups.
An investigation into the use of male sterility as a classificatory character is described.
Of the hybrid cultivars examined, some were found to be uniformly male sterile, more were uniformly male fertile and some were mixed.
The value of this and others characters for cultivar classification is discussed.
