Abstract:
Protease activity was present in extracts of petals from cut roses during vaselife, whether the flowers were previously treated or not with 20 μmol of p-hydroxymercuribenzoate (protease inhibitor). Vase life was 10 days, in double-distilled water, at 20°C and 60% relative humidity under continuous illumination at 1 klx.
Only on the 10th day was the specific activity of protease in extracts from untreated flowers higher than from treated flowers.
The same occurred in a second trial in which flowers were treated with much less inhibitor, 0.25 μmol (no visible phytotoxic effects). Mercury from the inhibitor was detected in the petals within one day.
Inhibition of protease activity did not prolong vase life, as indicated by abscission of petals, which occurred later than the 10th day for treated and untreated flowers.
