ISHS Acta Horticulturae 181: III International Symposium on Postharvest Physiology of Ornamentals

DESIGN FOR STUDIES ON ETHYLENE SENSITIVITY AND ETHYLENE PRODUCTION OF ORNAMENTAL PRODUCTS

Authors:   E.J. Woltering, E.P. Sterling
Abstract:
A description is given of a closed storage system consisting of stainless steel plant chambers equipped with a carbon dioxide scrubber and an oxygen injection mechanism, which are connected to a gas chromatograph with an auto-sampler. The system proved to be suitable for storage of ornamental products without significant deviation of the internal atmosphere (CO2, O2, N2) during the time course of the experiments. The system was designed both for ethylene fumigation experiments and for estimating ethylene production of ornamental products. The properties of the system are discussed using experimental data on ethylene production and ethylene sensitivity of pretreated carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L. cv. Scania) cut flowers.
