ISHS Acta Horticulturae 181: III International Symposium on Postharvest Physiology of Ornamentals

CHEMICAL TREATMENTS TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF CUT GYPSOPHILA FLOWERS

Authors:   J. Tandler, Y. Mor, H. Spiegelstein, S. Mayak
Abstract:
The effects of postharvest chemical treatments on cut flowering stems of Gypsophila were evaluated. Quaternary ammonium compounds were found effective in delaying flower wilting thus prolonging their vase life. Treatments in which such compounds were combined with sucrose had the added effect of enhancing flower opening. Silver thiosulphate suppressed the initial opening of flowers, but after a few days there were more open flowers on the stems. Optimal conditions for treatments are discussed.
