ISHS Acta Horticulturae 181: III International Symposium on Postharvest Physiology of Ornamentals

EFFECT OF A POST-HARVEST TREATMENT AT THE GROWERS ON BULB FLOWER QUALITY

Author:   A. Swart
Abstract:
A long period of dry storage can be harmful to the quality and the vase life of bulb flowers.

Harvesting the flowers at a defined stage of maturity and watering the flowers before storage may prevent these negative effects.

Moreover, some iris cultivars fail to open after dry storage. A post-harvest treatment with growth-substances at the growers may induce flower opening at the customers.

For dahlia flowers the damage evoked during transportation can be reduced by giving them a post-harvest treatment with flower nutrient.
