A NEW FORMULA FOR THE ANTI-ETHYLENE PRETREATMENT OF CUT CARNATIONS

Authors:   O.L. Staden, J.G. Beekhuizen
Abstract:
Pretreatment of 'Scania' standard carnations with a formula consisting of four plants growth regulators (GA, kinetin, daminozide and AOA) and the detergent Triton X-100 extended the longevity of the cut flowers nearly as much as did STS. This was true both under control conditions (absence of exogenous ethylene) and after treatment with 0.21 ppm C2H4 (v/v) for 24 h at 20°C. It is concluded that STS can be replaced if environmental objections will force authorities to issue restrictions.

The new formula was found to be useful both for standard and for spray carnations.

Abbreviations AOA = alpha-aminooxyacetic acid; STS = silverthiosulphate; GA = gibberellic acid (GA3).
