ISHS Acta Horticulturae 181: III International Symposium on Postharvest Physiology of Ornamentals

LOW-VOLUME CROP PROTECTION IN DUTCH FLORICULTURE

Author:   I.P. Rietstra
Abstract:
High standard of growing of ornamentals in Dutch greenhouses demands a frequent and intensive use of pesticides.

Usually the application of a pesticide is laborious, not the least because spray volumes of up to 10000 1/ha are used.

At the research station, Very Low Volume (VLV) spraying techniques for greenhouse conditions are investigated.

Sprayings with reduced volumes (from 5 up to about 50 1/ha) have shown to give good control of frequently occurring pests and diseases in chrysanthemum crops, even if reduced pesticide dosages per area were applied.

Besides an optimalisation of the application (with more direct control and enhanced deposition), spraying with small quantities of liquid offers possibilities for automatization: first experiencies with an automatically operating VLV-spray boom in a chrysanthemum greenhouse were quite encouraging.
