ISHS Acta Horticulturae 181: III International Symposium on Postharvest Physiology of Ornamentals

PRE-TREATMENT ESSENTIAL FOR QUALITY

Author:   M.H. Bouwman
Abstract:
Pre-treatment of Carnation, Lilium, Lathyrus, Delphinium and Aconitum with STS (silver thiosulfate) is very effective. Growers of these flowers can buy STS, among others, at the(ir) flower auction 'FLORA'.

In the 'FLORA' laboratory flowers are examined for pre-treatment according to a method developed by Ir. W. Klop and H. Zonneveld of the Sprenger Institute.

The method is based on wet destruction of some receptacles, followed by pH adjustment to pH 2.5; addition of dimethyl amino benzylidene rhodanine leads to an immediate Ag-reaction.

After shaking out with ether, an amount of 4–5 ug Ag already shows up clearly as a red complex at the interface.

As an additional detail it can be stated that 'FLORA' takes care of the destruction of used STS solutions by means of a specially developed installation.
