ISHS Acta Horticulturae 181: III International Symposium on Postharvest Physiology of Ornamentals

THE OVARY AS A SINK IN THE SENESCENCE OF CUT CARNATION FLOWERS

Authors:   E.L. Cook, J. Van Staden
Abstract:
High invertase activity in the carnation ovary apparently maintains a sucrose gradient and hence a carbohydrate sink in the senescing flower. Using an in vitro system, sucrose was shown not to influence ovary sink development. The application of NAA greatly stimulated ovary development. The significance of auxins in the creation of a carbohydrate sink within the ovaries is discussed.
