Abstract:
Studies were carried out at Horticulture Department, Marathwada Agricultural University, Parbhani, into the effects of various levels of N, P, K and spacing, and effects of sucrose and GA3 on Gladiolus spikes.
Observations of cut spikes, numbers of florets opened, numbers of florets dried, etc., were made and statistically analysed.
In vase-life studies with N, P and K doses, the spikes from the 100 kg N treatment showed significantly largest number of open florets per spike.
On the same day the highest P level (150 kg P2O5/ha gave the highest number of open florets.
The number of dry florets on the 6th day was significantly influenced by NxPxK interaction.
The total water absorption by the cut spikes harvested from the widest spacing (30x30 cm) was significantly highest.
In the trial with chemicals, 6% sucrose was found to be a good medium for prolonging the vase-life of gladiolus spikes.
