GROWTH SUBSTANCES AND POST HARVEST FLOWER SENESCENCE

Abstract:
Some effects of plant growth substances and growth regulators on cut flowers are reviewed. Flower species differ in their response to such compounds and this can be demonstrated by comparing effects of auxins on carnation and other cut flower species. In carnation, auxins at suitable concentrations accelerate senescence, promote increased levels of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid in the gynoecium and petals and enhance production of ethylene.

The observations are discussed in relation to the control of flower senescence and to the areas which might merit further investigation.
