THE EFFECT OF ETHEPHON AND STS TREATMENT ON FLOWER MALFORMATION AND FLOWER BUD ABSCISSION IN BEGONIA X CHEIMANTHA EVERETT

Authors:   R. Moe, A. Smith-Eriksen
Abstract:
Spraying the plants with increasing ethephon concentrations (100–2000 ppm) enhanced flower malformation and flower bud abscission. Treatments at later stages of flower bud development (Stages III and IV) resulted in a higher amount of damage than earlier treatments (Stage I and II). A high ethephon concentration at stage I and II almost completely inhibited flower bud opening.

Silver thiosulphate (STS)-treated plants partially overcame the ethephon-induced flower bud abscission when the STS concentration was low (0.03 mM). With higher concentration (1.05 mM) the flower bud abscission and flower malformation were almost completely eliminated. 6.25 mM STS caused some flower bud and flower injuries.
