ISHS Acta Horticulturae 181: III International Symposium on Postharvest Physiology of Ornamentals

PREFACE

Author:   H.C.M. de Stigter
Abstract:
As the final act of the Third International Symposium on the Post-Harvest Physiology of Ornamentals, held in Noordwijkerhout, The Netherlands, from 1–5 July 1985, the Organizing Committee takes pleasure in presenting this volume of 'Acta Horticulturae' containing the invited and contributed papers, and the written versions of almost all of the posters that were on display.

Following the opening paper on the ornamental post-harvest research in The Netherlands, the oral papers are presented chronologically, i.e., in the order in which they were given at the Symposium. Then follow the poster-based papers in alphabetical order, according to the (first) authors.

We should also like to make a few comments on our editing. In the first place, 'Acta Horticulturae' is not a refereed journal. Furthermore, we wanted to include in this volume the complete subject-matter, presented to the Symposium on the basis of accepted Abstracts. In so doing, the results, interpretations and conclusions given in the papers remain the sole responsibility of the authors.

Our second remark concerns the camera-ready system adopted for this publication, which has its inherent problems. On the one hand, it supposes the typescripts submitted to be truly ready for reproduction. On the other hand, for editing to make any sense, minor or even major changes are sometimes necessary. We hope to have succeeded in finding an acceptable least-intervention compromise, i.e., readable texts free from major errors (spelling and/or grammatical), but without attempting to remove every trace of foreign idiom. In this respect, we are even inclined to argue that some extent of non-English idiom (not interfering with intelligibility), just like personal idiosyncrasies, may add to the special flavour of a paper.

As to spelling variants, we made a discovery relating to an aspect of this Symposium, the phenomenon of leaf, bud and flower drop: people reporting on this phenomenon can be distinguished in 'abscising' and 'abscissing' partisans, each party with about equal numbers of followers.
