ISHS Acta Horticulturae 180: Workshop on Clonal Selection in Tree Fruit

OBSERVATIONS ON CLONES OF THE APPLE CULTIVARS BELLE DE BOSKOOP, MCINTOSH AND COX'S ORANGE PIPPIN

Author:   J. Grauslund
Abstract:
Of four red fruited clones of 'Belle de Boskoop' the clone 'Schmitz-Hübsch' had the most colour. It also had a high proportion of striped fruits, which is a characteristic of the particular sources tested. Clones 'Kalfs', 'Verheul' and 'Lambrechts' had less coloured fruits but only few stripes. Nine clones of 'McIntosh' and the cultivar 'Jonamac' were tested for fruit colour, appearance, and bruising tendency. 'Macspur', 'Morspur', 'Cornell', and 'Jonamac' had best colour and appearance. Bruising after grading was least in 'Jonamac', but this seems not to be connected to the physical properties of the fruit flesh, but may be caused by it's more regular fruit shape. Of 12 clones of 'Cox's Orange Pippin' the English 'Queen' and the Dutch 'T12' were best rated for fruit appearance.
