Abstract:
Mutagenesis was applied to improve traditional grape cultivars.
Grafted vines of clones of White Riesling, Ruländer (Pinot gris), Blauer Spätburgunder (Pinot noir), Müller-Thurgau and other varieties were irradiated with different doses of x-rays and fast neutrons.
Isolation of single buds in vM1 as early as possible proved to be efficient.
It was possible to isolate sectorial and periclinal chimaeras and solid mutants as well as some with different colour of berries.
The objectives of our programme are to induce mutation without altering significantly the unique genotype of famous varieties like White Riesling but improving different characteristics by clonal selection.
Within this programme 40 new clones of well known Geisenheim clones were grafted and will be evaluated in the next few years.
