Abstract:
In Belgium the breeding of ornamental plants is situated in the districts of Ghent and Eeklo with the exception of a few minor centres such as in the surroundings of Bruges.
In the last ten years there has been a large development of ornamental plant-breeding resulting in a high total export (table 1, fig. 1).
Such a strong development of ornamental plant-breeding in a relatively small area raises the problem of getting satisfactory quantities of good mould which can be used for cultivating ornamental plants.
The quality of the moulds is mainly a matter of physical characteristics, as the chemical properties can be taken care of by fertilization.
