FLOWER SYNCHRONIZATION OF STAMINATE AND PISTILLATE PISTACHIO TREES (PISTACIA VERA L.) WITH PACLOBUTRAZOL

Authors:   I.C. Porlingis, D.G. Voyiatzis
Abstract:
The pistachio staminate cv B usually flowers earlier than the pistillate cv Aiginis. In order to overcome the resulting problem of pollination paclobutrazol was used to delay the flowering of the staminate trees and thus synchronize the flowering of staminate and pistillate trees.

Branches of staminate cv B were sprayed with aqueous paclobutrazol solutions at 0, 100, 250, 500, 1 000, 2 000 or 4 000 mg ai/l at the end of June, when the extention of the shoots had ceased. The following spring there was a delay in the growth of flower buds of treated branches compared to the control. The flowering period (period of anther dehishence and shedding of pollen) of the control covered only one fourth of the flowering period (period of pistil receptivity) of pistillate trees, while the latter coincided with the flowering periods of paclobutrazol treated branches. In certain treatments anther dehishence continued after the end of receptivity of pistils for one to four days. Pollen germination percentage was satisfactory (≥ 70%) in all treatments. The quantity of pollen produced per g f.wt. of inflorescences did not differ among treatments. Paclobutrazol also delayed the opening of vegetative buds and decreased the length of the new shoots.
