Abstract:
Under glasshouse conditions one-year-old grapevines (cv.
Riesling and Silvaner) were subjected to cyclic drought and irrigation treatments with a minimum leaf water potential of -17 bar.
Daily measurements of the leaf water status, the osmotic potential at full torgor of the apices and the abscisic acid (ABA) content of the leaves revealed osmotic adjustment in the apices and a close negative correlation between the osmotic potential at full turgor of the apices and the ABA content of the leaves.
It is suggested that during water stress an increase of the ABA content in the leaves leads to an enhanced transport of assimilates from the leaves to the apex thereby contributing to osmotic adjustment.
