Abstract:
Periodically defoliating and/or defloration and defruiting of apple, pear, and prune spurs disclosed that floral induction took place within 6 to 9 weeks after anthesis.
When embryos begin to develop, gibberellins are exported to the adjacent spur and inhibit flower formation.
Increasing the leaf area or applying cytokinins to the leaf overcomes the presence of seed fruits.
Defoliating 'Chico' walnut shoots did not inhibit pistillate flower formation, while removal of developing kiwifruit shoots caused dormant but potentially fruitful buds to become vegetative.
Gibberellin and auxin applications to flowers enhanced set of parthenocarpic fruits.
Kinetin sprays on immature walnut flowers caused them to set but spurs growing under poor light conditions did not survive the winter.
