ISHS Acta Horticulturae 179: V International Symposium on Growth Regulators in Fruit Production

RESULTS OF HIGH DENSITY APPLE ORCHARDS TREATED WITH GROWTH RETARDANTS IN SPAIN

Authors:   F. Gil-Albert, M.T. Aguado
Abstract:
Results of experiments with modified apple "meadow orchards" in different fruit growing areas of Spain (Madrid, Zaragoza, Asturias and Malaga) are presented. A range of cultivars, rootstocks and planting densities were studied. Daminozide ('Alar') and paclobutrazol ('Cultar') were applied at different timings and concentrations. Instead of de-heading the trees every two years, as in the original meadow orchard system, shoot growth and cropping were controlled by growth retardants and light winter pruning.
