GROWTH ANALYSIS IN TOMATO PLANTS GROWN IN HEWITT CULTURE SOLUTION AND FERTILIZED COMPOSTS UNDER CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENTS. |

| Abstract:
Two different root culture mediums, Hewitt culture solution and fertilized composts, were tested to find out whether any differences occurs in growth patterns of tomato plants grown in an ordinary greenhouse in general, and grown for a period of 7 days under controlled environments with either 21% or 5% O2 concentration in particular. Results indicated that under the circumstances employed, the general growth patterns, and the low O2-enhancement effect were not influenced by the kinds of root culture mediums used for growing tomato plants. Net assimilation rate, and the magnitude of the increase in net assimilation rate due to lowering ambient O2 level, were not affected. However, the results also indicated that the fresh matter to dry matter ratios in plant organs of plants grown in Hewitt culture solution were higher than those grown in fertilized composts, but care is to be taken in interpreting the results obtained, because the solution-grown plants were smaller than those grown in fertilized composts. | |
