ISHS Acta Horticulturae 178: Symposium on Nutrition, Growing Techniques and Plant Substrates

COMPOSTING OF OLIVE MARC ON A MEDIUM SCALE

Authors:   M. Pagés, C. Calvet, N. Andreu
Abstract:
Previous experiments had shown that olive marc could be used as a substrate in horticulture after optimizing the final product with physical conditionners. In this work, olive marc was composted in bigger rotting boxes (1 m3 volume) that were located outdoors. Humidity was maintained near 40% and aeration was induced when needed during the process. Temperature was registered everyday from twelve thermic sensors placed at different points in an area, representative of the whole compost pile. After 14 days of composting, temperature had increased from 20°C to 60°C in the centre of the box, while a T° of 25°C was still registered in the peripheral zone. Samples were taken weekly to determine a wide range of chemical parameters and chromatographic analysis gave quantitative levels of fatty acids and organic acids in compost extracts.
