EVALUATION OF OLIVE MARC COMPOST MATURITY BY INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY

Authors:   C. Calvet, J. Pera, M. Pagés, J.M. Grases
Abstract:
An Infrared absorption method has been developed in order to measure the maturity of olive marc compost. The intensity of absorption bands in various regions of the IR spectra (1750–1710 cm-1 1690–1600 cm-1, 1480–1390 cm-1, 1315–1000 cm-1 and 800–675 cm-1) referred to compost sample, decreased gradually during the composting process. IR spectrophotometry appeared to be a rapid and simple method to screen the compost decomposition rate.

At regular intervals, samples were extracted for quantitative measurements of potentially phyotoxic compounds using Gas and High Performance Liquid Chromatographic Techniques (GC and HPLC).
