EFFECTS OF FUNGICIDES ON NITRIFICATION IN PEAT COMPOSTS

Author:   G.C.S. Wilson
Abstract:
An experiment is described to examine the effects of the following fungicides on nitrification in peat composts, Aaterra, Terradactyl, Benlate, Carbate, Maneb, Captan, Zineb and Daconil.

Results show that Terradactyl, Aaterra, Daconil and Captan are the most toxic on nitrifying bacteria and that Carbate and Benlate have the least effect. From these results careful selection and use of fungicides is of prime importance where there is a significant level of ammonium nitrogen or slow release urea formaldehyde in the composts.
