EFFECT OF VIRAZOLE ON THE PRODUCTION OF HYACINTH PLANTS FREE FROM HYACINTH MOSAIC VIRUS (HMV) BY MERISTEM CULTURE

Authors:   Gerry J. Blom-Barnhoorn, J. van Aartrijk, P.C.G. van der Linde
Abstract:
The effects of Virazole on the growth of adventitiously formed meristems on bulb-scale tissue of hyacinth mosaic virus (HMV)-infected hyacinth 'Rosalie', and on the chance of obtaining virus-free plants through culture of isolated meristems were investigated.

Addition of Virazole to the nutrient medium in concentrations up to 40 uM reduced the number of adventitiously formed meristems, but increased the fresh weight of the resulting bulblets. At 200 uM Virazole severely inhibited the regeneration of meristems.

Virus-free plants were obtained in all treatments. The presence of Virazole in the meristem-inducing medium did not reduce the percentage of plants with HMV.
