SIMILARITIES OF AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN POTYVIRUSES FROM BULBOUS AND RHIZOMATOUS IRISES

Authors:   A.F.L.M. Derks, Th.C. Hollinger
Abstract:
In a survey of rhizomatous irises two potyviruses were detected. These viruses were partially characterized on the basis of serological tests and symptom expression of inoculated test plants, and were compared with potyvirus isolates from bulbous irises. One of the potyviruses appeared to be bean yellow mosaic virus, the other one iris severe mosaic virus (ISMV). Serological tests with antiserum to bearded iris mosaic virus (BIMV) from rhizomatous iris and comparison of our results with data in literature make it plausible that ISMV and BIMV are synonymous.
