Abstract:
The techniques mostly used for application of chemical disinfectants to bulbs are spraying with or drenching in a solution of disinfectants.
Because of several disadvantages of these methods, research has been carried out to develop alternative techniques.
The application of disinfectants in foam has been chosen as the most promising one.
Treatment by this method can be carried out on a specially adapted planting machine, or separately with a stationary disinfection machine developed for this method.
Several physical characteristics of the foam to be used in this method, have been studied.
With the necessary adjustments, complete mobile and stationary systems have been developed.
Parallell research into the effectiveness of this new disinfection method in several bulb crops has been carried out by horticultural specialists of the Bulb Research Centre.
