Abstract:
In recent years an increased incidence of infestation of Gladiolus corms in storage rooms by Taeniothrips simplex Morison was observed in The Netherlands, possibly as the result of a reduction in effectiveness of the then used insecticide dichlorvos.
Experiments were performed to test other insecticides used in different application systems.
Of them, the organophosphorus compound pirimiphos-methyl, applied as a (pulse) fog, was found to control the thrips effectively.
This insecticide was shown to exert its action, at least partly, in the vaporous state.
It is concluded that for an effective control of Taeniothrips simplex Morison on Gladiolus corms in storage rooms (pulse) fog treatments with pirimiphos-methyl (500 g/1: 2 ml. m-3) may be used.
