SOME FACTORS AFFECTING THE INCIDENCE OF BACTERIAL SOFT ROT IN BULBOUS IRIS

Author:   W. Kamerman
Abstract:
In forced bulbous irises, especially cv. Prof. Biaauw, a soft rot may occur that is caused by the bacterium Erwinia carotovora pv. carotovora.

Results of experiments showed that a number of factors promote the incidence of the disease, viz.,

  • mechanical damage of the bulbs just before planting,
  • organic matter mixed through the soil prior to planting of the bulbs,
  • high temperature in the glasshouse (within the range 15°-27°C), and
  • high moisture content of the soil.

When sufficient precautions are taken with regard to these factors, the disease incidence can be reduced to an acceptably low level.

Chemical treatments of the bulbs with captan or the experimental compound C-103 reduced the incidence of the disease.
