Abstract:
In the U.S. and Canada, flower-bulbs are forced and marketed as either potted plants or cut flowers.
Both rooting room and non-rooting rooting room forcing procedures are used.
In general, the sizes of the pots used are either 10, 15 or 20 cm in diameter.
Depending on the bulb species and container diameter, the depth will be either standard (full), ¾ (azalea) or ½ (pan) sized.
The plant heights required for the pot plant market range from 10–20 cm for 10 cm pots to 25–50 cm for 15 and 20 cm pots.
The forcing and market requirements for 8 rooting room bulbs and 9 non-rooting room bulbs are described.
For cut flowers, bulbs are grown either in ground beds, raised benches that are at least 20 cm deep or in flats that are at least 10 cm deep.
Calla lilies (Zantedeschia) are grown in 20 or 25 cm pots.
In general, the minimum market requirements for cut flowers is 30 cm with 40–50 cm being preferred for some species, e.g., tulips, and greater than 60 cm for other bulbs, e.g., lilies.
The forcing and market requirements of 7 bulbs species are described.
