Abstract:
In the Netherlands gladiolus is mainly infected by bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV), and incidentally by cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), tobacco rattle virus (TRV), a newly recognized possible carlavirus tentatively named gladiolus ringspot virus(GRV), and a tobamovirus, presumably tobacco mosaic virus (TMV). Their symptoms are further described additional to those reported in the literature.
BYMV has been eliminated from many cultivars by meristem culture.
Control of this rapidly spread, aphid-borne non-persistently transmitted virus by weekly mineral-oil or pyrethroid insecticide sprays was considerable, but could not preserve virus freedom of the crops.
Control of TRV and corky pit agent by soil disinfestation, and these viruses plus CMV and GRV by selection and inspection of growers' crops are briefly indicated.
The feasible production of virus-free gladiolus is discussed with regard to BYMV spread and not fully adequate control by mineral-oil or insecticide spraying, if source plants in or outside gladiolus may be around at very low rate.
