Abstract:
In comparative trials virus-tested Narcissus stocks propagated in Scotland by twin scaling and subsequent field multiplication produced bulb weight increases 15–20% greater than commercial stocks.
Earlier growth and flowering were also associated with the absence of viruses but there was no improvement in the quality or quantity of flowers.
Evaluation of virus-tested Narcissus is complicated by factors such as virus re-infection, differences in propagation techniques and in earliness of stocks, which depends on where they were previously grown.
In the present work a major problem has been an effect of twin scaling, which affects bulbs for at least five years.
