ISHS Acta Horticulturae 177: IV International Symposium on Flower Bulbs

EFFECT OF SHORT PHOTOPERIOD AND GROWTH REGULATORS ON GROWTH, FLOWERING AND TUBERIZATION OF BEGONIA X TUBERHYBRIDA

Author:   J. Tonecki
Abstract:
Effects of GA3, IAA, kinetin, ethrel and morphactin /CF 125/, as well as short photoperiod, applied as 60, 90 or120 10-hour days, on growth, flowering and tuberization in Begonia x tuberhybrida were investigated.

Only GA3 promoted the plant growth and considerably increased the number of flowers. Other growth regulators affected neither flowering nor sex expression.

The most pronounced effect on tuberization was exerted by photoperiod: the tuber size was proportional to the number of short days applied.

The interaction of short days and GA3 in tuber formation was highly significant. GA3, IAA, kinetin and ethrel increased the tuber weight in plants grown under natural day lenght but this increase was considerably lower than that caused by short days.
