ISHS Acta Horticulturae 176: International Symposium on Protected Cultivations in the Mediterranean Regions

DESIGN CRITERIA AND TECHNICAL AND BUILDING SOLUTIONS FOR PROTECTED CULTIVATIONS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN AREAS

Authors:   A. Failla, C.R. Fichera
Abstract:
The Mediterranean areas are undoubtedly some of the most involved in problems concerning protected cultivations because of the remarkable spread of them in these regions. The favourable climatology allowed the diffusion of structures built according to empirical choices rather than rational criteria.

It is apparent today there is necessity to restructure the sector through the definition of schemes and methods of construction that, by allowing an increase of solar energy received, a decrease of thermal losses, an easiness of building and a sufficient availability of surfaces and volumes, assure both adequate thermic levels and restrained running costs.

In this note, according to some studies on the protected cultivations in Sicily carried out during ten years now at the " Istituto di Costruzioni Rurali " of Catania, some technical and building proposals to improve thermal efficiency of greenhouses are elaborated.
