WASTE HEAT FROM POWER PLANTS (WET TOWER COOLING) FOR GERBERA CULTIVATION IN GLASSHOUSE

Authors:   M. Schiavi, G. Rotino, T. Maggiore, F. Parrini, D. Casarotti, G.P. Soressi
Abstract:
The authors report the first results obtained with Gerbera crop (Gerbera jamesonii H. Bolus) in glasshouse heated by waste heat (22°-25°C) available from a wet tower cooling system. The waste heat was distributed in the air by an air-forced exchanger and in the substrate by polyetylene pipes. A similar glasshouse, as control, was heated in the air at 15°C minimum temperature, by a conventional electric system (aerotherm). Gold Fire, Boston and Charleston were the cultivars tested. The production of cut flowers in both glasshouses was satisfactory as quantity and quality; no difference was noticed between the two glasshouses. The annual economic saving attainable by using waste heat was evaluated to be 18,000 1L/m2.
