WEED CONTROL IN PROTECTED CROPS OF TOMATO, CUCUMBER AND MELON WITH HERBICIDES AND POLYETHYLENE MULCH

Author:   A. Vicari
Abstract:
A two year experiment was carried out to evaluate the efficacy of some herbicides, in combination with or without the polyethylene mulch, on tomato, cucumber and melon glass house crops.

On tomato crop the black plastic mulch gave the best results, especially if associated with pendimethalin.

On cucumber crop the mixture isopropalin + alipur allowed the highest yields, with no fitotoxic effects on crop. Pendimethalin and benfluralin achieved quite good results, while a certain toxicity towards the crop was showed by trifluralin.

In the melon trial weed control was determinant in allowing high productions. Isopropalin and pendimethalin, combined with the white polyethylene mulch, revealed a good crop selectivity and gave higher yields than white plastic mulch alone.

On tomato and melon crops activated charcoal (Gro-Safe) was also tested. It seemed to reduce the weed control action of herbicides without improving their crop selectivity.
