CULTURAL SYSTEMS AND TECHNIQUES IN MEDITERRANEAN PROTECTED HABITATS

Author:   P. Caruso
Abstract:
A critical examination of special systems of culture, soiless and on natural and artificial substrata, is carried out, pointing out possibility and limits of application for mediterranean protected cultures. Since the alternatives to form land culture are poor, it is proposed its rationalization by means of organic and mineral amending treatments, soil ameliorants of alkalinity, rational tillings, proper control of self-sown species, physico-chemical and biological disinfestation of soil, etc…

In relation to soil characteristics and climatic conditions of mediterranean habitat, it is discussed about deepening of plant root system, moderate cultural density, mist irrigation, use of antitraspirants and other agronomic techniques able to rise the productive process of species and varieties utilized in protected culture.
