ISHS Acta Horticulturae 176: International Symposium on Protected Cultivations in the Mediterranean Regions

CLIMATE AND PROTECTED CULTIVATION

Author:   H.Z. Enoch
Abstract:
This opening paper for the session on climate and protected cultivation will consider the historical development of plant enclosures from minimal to maximal climate modification. Then, the influence of plants on climate will be discussed in two contexts. First, the influence of 3500 million years of photosynthesis on global climate, and secondly, the influence of plants on greenhouse climate. Furthermore, three options for supplying the consumers with out-of-season fruit, flowers and vegetables will be compared: transport over climate zones, storage over seasons, and climate modifications obtained by using protected cultivation. Finally, we shall discuss different research methods for determination of a crop's climate demand.
