ISHS Acta Horticulturae 175: Symposium on Physiology of Productivity of Subtropical and Tropical Tree Fruits

FLUSHING PATTERNS OF MACADAMIA TREES IN SOUTH EAST QUEENSLAND

Authors:   R.A. Stephenson, B.W. Cull
Abstract:
Monthly flushing patterns on both north and south sides of macadamia trees at Maleny in south east Queensland were assessed over three seasons. Major flushes occurred in late summer and early spring when mean monthly maximum and minimum temperatures were within threshold limits. Rainfall influenced the extent but not the timing of major flushing peaks. Unseasonal rain in late spring, however, stimulated secondary flushing peaks. Applications of nitrogen also affected the amount rather than the timing of vegetative growth. The northern sides of trees produced more flush than the southern sides in autumn and winter. The desirability of monitoring flushing patterns to more completely assess the effects of management practices on long term production is discussed.
