Abstract:
Trends in the concentrations of four plant growth substances (PGS) were studied in developing 'Fuerte' avocado fruits from fruit set to fruit maturity.
Radioimmunoassays were developed and validated for the cytokinins isopentenyl adenine (2iP) and isopentenyl adenosine (IPA), the auxin indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), and the inhibitor abscisic acid (ABA). The developing seed was a rich source of promotive PGS, especially IAA and 2iP, and concentrations exceeded those in the flesh.
ABA concentration increased in the flesh as the fruit approached maturity.
Pronounced morphological and PGS changes occurred in the testa prior to presumed horticultural maturity.
The study confirmed the important regulatory role of the seed and testa in avocado fruit growth and maturation.
